This rare Vivianite specimen from the Amazonas region of Brazil is sometimes dramatically nicknamed “Corpse Crystal,” a name connected to Vivianite’s unusual ability to form under certain phosphate-rich, low-oxygen conditions—including, in rare documented circumstances, on or near decomposing organic remains. Despite the wonderfully macabre nickname, Vivianite is not exclusively formed from human or animal remains.

Fresh Vivianite can be nearly colorless or pale, but exposure to light and oxidation can gradually transform it into striking shades of blue, blue-green, green and eventually darker tones—making its changing appearance part of what makes this mineral so fascinating.
