Amethyst is Quartz and of the violet variety. It gets its name from Greek, améthystos, which means intoxicate, which refers to the belief that the stone protects its owner from drunkenness. In ancient Greece the wine god Bacchus who got angry over an insult and wanted to avenge himself so he decreed the first person he meets would be ate by his tigers. Unfortunately, the mortal he met was the beautiful maiden Amethyst on her way to worship her deity Diana at her shrine. When one of the beasts attacked, she sought protection of the Goddess and was saved by being turned into a clear white crystal. Then when wine god Bacchus witness this he regretted his cruelty and poured his wine over the crystal as an offering which gave the crystal it’s beautiful purple hue.
